What is the Feldenkrais® Method?

This method (pronounced ‘feld-in-kra-ice’) was named after Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais, a world-renowned physicist, judo expert, and bioengineering genius. The Feldenkrais Method® is a form of somatic education. In this context, the root word “soma” refers to the experience of the body’s functioning to perception. Learning comes from experience, from the body-to-the-brain. 

Dr. Feldenkrais developed a method to enhance the innate intelligence of learning through the sensory and muscular-skeletal systems. After experiencing the movement, the mind’s perception.

The Sciences Behind the Method

The method was derived from the fields of physics, development, neurophysiology, and movement. 

Learning

The human experience is a synthesis of the senses of the mind and body and concerning the immediate environment. Together, the mind-body experience develops perception. How we perceive is a learned reality. Daily life interacts with the immediate circumstances, and senses move us to react. Experiences are interactions with the self and life. The body sends cascading impulses through nerves to the brain. Together with nature and nature, over time, movement patterns form ways of thinking. These patterns become what we call thoughts, feelings, and actions. 

What connects muscles to bones? The activities of the mind. Even in hearing, muscles of the eardrum are affected, the head tips, the eyes shift, the posture attends. We are predominantly “feeling creatures” that learn, says neurophysiologists like Jill Taylor, Carla Hannaford, and John Ratey.
